What are Peer Support Meetings?
Equilibrium Halton offers peer support for those affected by mental health conditions and their friends, families and caregivers.
Focus
Equilibrium’s focus, wellness through education and sharing, is accomplished through monthly meetings with guest speakers and participant’s sharing experiences and ideas.
Information Exchange/ Education
Guest speakers include individuals with lived experience, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, psychologists, mental health program leaders and specialists in nutrition and relaxation among others.
Sharing Meetings
Speaker presentations are followed by sharing meetings. Attendees are split into 2 groups:
-
those working to maintain their wellness who may or may not have a mental health related diagnosis
-
family members, friends or caregivers/support partners
Everyone at Equilibrium has a story. By sharing experiences, we help each other to understand the illness and to have the courage to keep fighting for improved health.
Equilibrium provides a safe environment to talk to someone who’s been there.
Family, Friends, and Caregivers
We understand the emotional upheaval a mood disorder can cause. It‘s family and friends who are relied upon to support those affected. Frequently, they do not understand the illness themselves.
A first step to help relieve tensions at home and to provide a caring environment for recovery, is understanding the illness.
We encourage attendance with your loved one, or alone if they are unable to attend.
Attending a Meeting
Attendees are welcomed by a core group member who will provide information upon arrival.
The meetings are usually attended by 20-40 people.
Confidentiality
The importance of confidentiality is emphasized at the beginning of every meeting.
People attending an Equilibrium meeting for the first time are welcome to sit back and listen. However, they are invited to share their thoughts if they wish.
Attendance is Free
Operating costs are covered by donations at meetings.

Changes in mood, stress, energy, and appetite can significantly impact eating patterns, while irregular eating can also intensify symptoms of anxiety, depression, and mood instability. Understanding the relationship between food and mental health can help reduce shame, increase self-awareness, and support more sustainable coping strategies.
This workshop will explore the connection between nutrition, mood, appetite, medications, and common thinking patterns such as all-or-nothing thinking. We will also discuss common nutrition trends, the importance of regular eating, and practical strategies for managing “hard days” in a flexible and realistic way.
Presented by Equilibrium Care Collective: Shauna Wallace, Registered Psychotherapist and Clinical Director, and Michelle Allison, Registered Dietitian. Together, they will provide education, practical tools, and supportive strategies to help individuals and loved ones better understand the relationship between food, mood, and mental wellness.
